“He looks tired, like someone walked on his skin and left footprints.”
A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.
We learned the five senses in school—touch, smell, sound, sight, taste–but how easy is it for us to use them in our writing? When we do, does it come naturally or is it a struggle? Who are the writers who descriptively write from their senses you greatly admire?
At the next Morning Writers, your hosts Jay Heltzer and
will talk about how to create vibrant descriptions using the five senses, and how to use them to enhance tension, character, setting, and plot. We’ll share some tasty examples and do some fun writing exercises.Bring your favorite samples of excellent, unique, or terrible “needs-improvement” sensory detail to share with the group (and typed out ahead of time so they can be shared in the chat) either from a previously printed book or some of your own, and come ready to take a smelly stab, a fuzzy flail, or even a delicious dive into writing with your senses.
Join us on Wednesday, September 27th at 8:30 ET via Zoom.
